Want a summer full of fun? The last thing you want is a clogged sewer pipe to bring the fun to a halt. Last winter, we shared some common cold-weather plumbing issues, but the hottest time of the year also poses unique plumbing challenges. Here are a few ways you can avoid common plumbing problems and keep your fun in the sun.
- No Outdoor Fun with an Unhappy Wash Machine
Summer is a prime time for activities involving dirt, sand, and other fun outdoor substances. The kids may love this, but the washing machine… not so much. These machines, though powerful, were not meant to process large amounts of sand, gravel, mud, or dirt, so try removing these substances from clothing before putting them in the washing machine. A quick rinse in the outside hose may do the trick.
- Some Summer Foods Don’t Mix with the Garbage Disposal
There are some foods that we enjoy in the summer, but your garbage disposal does not enjoy. It’s important to make sure these foods do not make it down the drain. Some of these foods include corn husks, corn cobs, banana peels, celery strings, artichokes, popcorn kernels, and bones and fat from BBQs.
- Pay Attention to Your Sprinkler System
Make sure your sprinkler system is inspected at least once a year. That way, you can be confident that your system is functioning as designed, and ready to keep your plants hydrated and looking great. Also, it is important to be careful to not hit sprinkler heads while mowing or letting your dogs out to play (sprinkler heads can be great chew toys for them.)
- Slower Shower Drains
Summer is full of trips to the beach. Debris such as sand, dirt, and pebbles can get caught up in bathing suits and often are cleaned while in the shower. Instead, consider rinsing off at the beach, or outside with a hose. This beach debris can cause a clogged shower drain and unpleasant ankle-deep showers. Also, keep an eye on the drain cover and remove any hair that gets stuck in there. Hair is the number one cause of bathroom drain clogs.
